Wikipedia search engine

Posted in education, politics, software, tutorials, web 2.0, wikis & widgets on September 27th, 2007

wikipediatrans.gifDespite knowing that many contributions to wikipedia are dubious, depending on the politics of the contributer, and also knowing that the FBI and CIA monitor it fairly closely, here is a new wikipedia search engine.

Wikipedia, if accurate, would surely be the most searchable database, but it still does not have that reputation. On topics that I know about, it is not so much what is said as what is not said. I’d be telling my students, that as it is a database that anyone can contribute to and edit, that they need to check its authority as a reference.

Nevertheless, it is an excellent start for many students.

My most visited pages are to do with free graphic editors. They are not just trials and they are not shareware.

I have an explanation of CSS and many inline css examples. There is a page or two of commonly used javascripts

There are many tutorials but the graphic ones (using mostly Paint shop pro) are here.

I have a set of subtle backgrounds

Have fun exploring!

Computer magazines online

Posted in computers, education, web design, web graphics on September 23rd, 2007

I’m retired so don’t hear of things I would normally if in the workplace. I often wanted to buy computer magazines to help me with web graphics, computers, web sites and cameras but felt I couldn’t afford them. Now I’ve found that they are online and you can subscribe to them for free and get their RSS feeds.

Having done that I wondered if buying the magazines was the only way to get that mostly outdated free stuff on disks. But no!

Here’s PC Authority’s download page.

Here’s the link to Australian IT news magazine

Here too is a small IT business magazine for those interested. God I hate that term “Grow your business”.

Anyway let’s hope these will keep you up to date as well.

Posted in photography, tutorials on September 21st, 2007

my dogHere’s the changed dog.

The old dog with blue eyes is just back here.

How did I do this?

1. Open photo in Photoshop

2. Zoom in

3. Use Elliptical Marquee Tool and use over one eye at a time.

4. Go to Image > Adjustments > Hue/Saturation

5. Use sliders to get the color you want. I check the colorize check box.

6. Deselect.

7. Repeat for eye 2.
