Home wireless networking with Netgear

I have a dual router which works for cable and wireless. This is at home and I’m talking about home networking here.

After setting up the cable networking, I immediately put a firewall on the wireless part of the network, but this is not enough security. It prevents others from seeing my computer, but not from using the wireless networking on my account.

This ability for others to use my wirelsss connection can stretch a few blocks, but my own neighbours used it. I was a bit put out by their blazenness and in telling me they were doing it, but now it was time to put a password on the wireless networking.

Most wireless routers have a user name and password by default: admin and password. Most savvy computer users know this.

Now to change the password so no-one else can use your bandwidth, go to Windows XP support, if you have XP.

Here, Windows must have detected my router because it took me to the netgear site where I could change the password. So I did so and applied it. The computer is running a bit faster now I must say.

If you have another kind of router Windows will probably pick that up too and you can do the same if you haven’t already. I recommend it.

I personally don’t like wireless connections because there are so many ways others can detect and use them. But these days it is pretty difficult to buy a purely cable kind of router.
