Renovating the decking

Posted in personal, photography on March 31st, 2008

We had a veranda which was rotting and had stairs which even the dog was too scared to go down. So it was time to at least replace it. I decided to extend it as we had to replace it anyway. It also has a roof, made of material which lets light in, but not heat. My physics honours kid said, “that’s not possible.” Next week he came back with a solution. No blue light and no ultraviolet light. Correct!

Anyway, I took the camera out today as the place I upload photos to: Dreamstime.com likes pictures of men at work and tools and things. Trouble is we can’t have a logo in the photos. So do you think I could get a shot of something without its logo. Even the workers had shirts on with stuff written across the front.

Also dreamstime doesn’t allow faces in photos without a model consent.

I uploaded a few which you will be able to see in 48 hours at Dreamstime

I can put one or two up here though. I asked them if they minded and no they didn’t. You will also get a view of the back of your blogger’s house.

The wedding with pictures of the person behind the blog

Posted in personal, photography on March 30th, 2008

Yesterday I went to my nephew’s wedding which was officiated by a marriage celebrant.
We were supposed to dress ‘cocktail’ but as it so rare for me to go to an event requiring formal wear I had to really search something out. I failed dismally of course, but managed to get the one man in my life into a suit. Needless to say, our son hasn’t got a suit top so he came without one.

Here is a picture of me and my partner.

Yes I noticed that my lips are now as thin as my mother’s were when she was my age too.

Here is a picture of our son and his partner. No he didn’t bother shaving.

The problem with digital cameras

Posted in photography, web graphics on March 29th, 2008

When I first got my digital camera, after having used an SLR for years, I couldn’t work out why people were holding theirs way out in front of them. I soon worked it out.
The LCD lens on a digital camera is pretty useless on a bright day. All you can see is black and you take photos blind.
My camera does have a viewfinder but it isn’t any use when I’m taking a zoomed image. What I see is not what I get.

There are cameras you can get which overcome the problem. The Sony W and the Canon G9 are just two of them. They have viewfinders which act like the ones on SLRs.

Or you can buy a Delkin Pop-up Shade which sticks to the back of the camera, protecting the LCD and which folds out to shade the screen.

Search me

Posted in computers, software on March 27th, 2008

This is what Searchme says about itself.

Searchme lets you see what you’re searching for. As you start typing, categories appear that relate to your query. Choose a category, and you’ll see pictures of web pages that answer your search. You can review these pages quickly to find just the information you’re looking for, before you click through.

We’re just getting started on our first step towards creating an entirely new way to search the Web. The quality of our results will vary as we make Searchme better and better.

This sounds a bit like Snap shots which you will see on my main site.

I have signed up for a beta version however, so more news soon.
