I've only watched one episode of Dexter. I'd read about the program somewhere and had made a mental note to watch it but couldn't remember why. I was very pleasantly surprised, if that's the right word. I thoroughly enjoyed it and plan not to miss it in future.

It's very refreshing to find an American show that is offbeat, quirky and based on black humour. There is none of the sentimentality, moralising or schmalz that I usually associate with American TV.

While the subject matter might be confronting and rather graphic, the deapan humour carries it through. I agree with the other comments that have been made here; the acting and writing is excellent and some serious issues are raised.

Fantastic stuff, thanks for the info in the original post.

As you mentioned over on my blog, your theory of it being a dream on Dexter's part is unfortunately not the case. However, I do think as you go on with the series you will understand more about where Dexter is coming from.

The thing I appreciate about Dexter is it is not black and white morally. This is a guy who does what he does because he believes it is the right thing. He does it within a "code" and he does remove people from the equation where the legal system is unable to do so. And because he only kills serial killers when he has proved to his satisfaction that they are serial killers, you have to ask how many lives does he save by doing what he does?

There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that the series contains some of the best acting ever seen yet in a TV series. Michael C Hall is absolutely amazing as Dexter and as you watch more episodes you'll appreciate that more and more. Not only that, the series contains some of the most beautiful scenery being set in Miami, it has some incredible music and the rest of the cast are wonderful actors as well.

I don't think it is meant to be something where you identify with the main character given that he is a sociopath serial killer type. :) It raises a lot of questions for me morally and I find the answers are not always clear cut. But I don't regret asking them and I certainly don't regret watching Dexter at all - it is currently my favourite show.
