Problem with Firefox

I only ever use Firefox but now after clicking on it, it takes about 3 minutes before I get a dialog box which says

A script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the script now, or you can continue to see if the script will complete.

Apparently this is a common problem.

When did it start happening? Well I can’t quite remember now but I had downloaded a firefox add on which was a You Tube downloader which never seemed to appear. So I deleted that add on. It can be a conflict between Firefox add ons. I had cleaned out my files, removed some programs which were not mine being careful to leave shared files. I had defragged.

I have typed about:config in the browser and altered dom.max_script_run_time to a higher number but it was already on 10 anyway. No luck.

I ended up deleting Firefox and downloading a newer version. I was leaving this until last because I didn’t want to lose my passwords which are saved by Firefox. They are still there and so is the problem.

Mozilla support isn’t much use. Other forums have suggested what I have already done.

I suspect the problem is in Documents and Settings > Firefox> Profile but I don’t know what to change there.

Can anyone help?

  1. The yesscrips block scripts from a certain website. Many sites still function even if scripting is disabled.

I thought I had posted a link in my comment, but anyway.. here’s the link again:
    http://support.mozilla.com/nl/kb/Warning+Unresponsive+script

and If you’re sure that an add-on caused the problem, you can check this out and see if it helps you:

  2. mmm..
    1. Try to uninstal it with a thirth party uninstaller.
    2. Run ccleaner (make sure you run the cleaner and register options in ccleaner)
    3. Restart
    4. Run ccleaner again (make sure you run the cleaner and register options in ccleaner)
    5. Install firefox again.

Make sure that you make a backup of your passwords, themes and add-ons with Mozbackup:

    See if that works..

  3. I don’t understand. How do I uninstall with a third party uninstaller?
    How do I run ccleaner?

I’ll check out your link for backing up though.

  4. What I mean with third-party uninstaller is a software like: Your Uninstaller 2008.

The standard Add/Remove program in XP often can’t uninstall applications completely-leaving broken registry keys and unused files on the hard disk. Beside that big registries and large numbers of unnecessary files make system slow. So your problem might be stock somewhere and you can get rid of it by using Your Uninstaller. I use this software at home and it’s very good!

    Ccleaner:
CCleaner is a freeware system optimization and privacy tool. It removes unused files from your system. It also cleans traces of your online activities such as your Internet history.

So uninstall FireFox with Your Uninstaller, Run CCLeaner, restart and run Ccleaner again just to make sure that nothing is left and install FireFox again.

This is what I do when I have troubles with a software… So I hope that this solves your problem.

  5. Hi Bioteck,
Your uninstaller is not free. I looked for another one which was free. I also used Mozbackup first.

I uninstalled and the one I used cleaned registry file also.

Downloaded Firefox again and same problem.

I didn’t need Mozbackup because all the bookmarks and stuff were still there so the uninstaller I used didn’t work very well.

Also Mozbackup said that the files I’d backed up were corrupted.

    Back to where I was.

  6. This is really odd! Your problem should be solved after this.. but it’s not! :(
    Let me think:
If Mozbackup says that the data are corrupted, you can do the followings.
    1. export your Firefox bookmarks your self by opening Firefox -> go to bookmarks -> Organise my bookmarks -> in the new window go to file -> export.
    2. Make screenshots (or write down) your passwords & usernames in Firefox. You can do it by opening Firefox -> Extra -> Option -> Security-> Show passwords. You can see your usernames for each website. Now click on show passwords again and you’ll see the passwords. Write this down, or make printscreens.

When you’ve done this, try to un-install firefox with the freeware tool which you had found, use ccleaner again and install Firefox again.

Personally. If this doesn’t solve anything, I would go and install the new version of firefox, then uninstal it and install the current version of FireFox…

    Good luck Jenny!
