Backing up your photos

While the bushfires were raging in Victoria, Australia, I’m sure many of us were thinking what would we take with us if we were in a hurry and we knew our house would probably burn down. Many think of their photo albums, but these days most of our photos are on the computer. Of course one could run with the hard disk, but rather bulky when you only have minutes to get out. An alternative is to have an extra external hard drive which would be easier to take.

We used to have CDs to back up our photos to and we still do, but how to find them in a hurry unless you are well organised? We also now have USB memory sticks but these items are also ones which cannot be in the house if you don’t have much time to get out.

The answer is to store them on someone else’s server.

If you have your own self hosted blog or web site, you can easily upload them via FTP (Filezilla is free) to your host, depending on the plan you have and how much room is there. They don’t have to link to your web site or blog;  just let them sit there. Create a folder called ‘photos’ on your host’s server. Of course, if you change your host remember to download all those photos to your own computer again. I lost quite a few photos by forgetting that once.

Then there is Flickr You can store as many photos as you like here and you don’t have to show them as public photos.

Everyone has an ISP. Most of these allow you to make a small web page for free. You could use that.

Also there is Google’s picasa - you can upload to this and make your photos private.

Off-site, online storage is really your best bet. Now, all you have to do is upload!

More digital camera terms

My camera, being a compact point and shoot one, does not produce RAW images, but jpegs. RAW imaging is better. RAW images are recorded unprocessed and uncompressed from the sensor onto a memory card. You then use special software to process it further.

The new DSLR cameras have focal lengths like the old film cameras. A 50mm lens on a DSLR camera has the same angle view as a 75mm lens on a film camera. With the compact digital cameras, sensors come in different sizes. One camera with a focal length of 6.2 mm is equal to 35mm lens on a film camera, while another might be 7.6mm equalling 35mm.

In digital cameras the white balance setting is usually set to auto, but there are possible settings: “auto”, “shade” “tungsten, and “fluorescent”. With film cameras, I remember lessons where we had to learn about getting a proper black and white photo by setting the aperture against a grey background.

Some digital camera terms explained

When I first bought a digital camera, there were only point and shoot types and the mega pixels were much fewer. Mine had only 3.1 and my son now has a mobile phone with 6 mega pixels. So, my camera (with fewer megapixels than the one below) is virtually useless and next I would definitely buy an SLR digital camera.

canon power shot camera

I used to upload some of my photos to the stock sites, like dreamstime, but the size of a photo taken with my camera is now quite small compared with the cameras with more mega pixels.  Dreamstime would specify that we should get rid of noise before uploading. I had no idea what noise was.

NOISE in a digital image has nothing to do with audio.  A digital camera emits photo receptors which are interpreted as black or randomly coloured dots. SLR digital cameras with a medium amount of mega pixels   have less noise than the smaller compact digital camera. But there is still noise. The makers therefore build in “noise reduction”. However noise reduction blurs fine detail. So the best digital camera is the SLR digital camera with a medium amount of mega pixels.

I’ve talked of mega pixels. A pixel is a tiny dot, thousands of which, make up an image. Now one would think that the more mega pixels the camera has , the better, but not so. My brother did research on this before he upgraded. The more mega pixels you have, the more NOISE.

ISO has always been a standard for cameras. In the old cameras before the digital, ISO settings were narrow, from about 50 to 400, 800.  With the new digital camera the ISO can be set to between 50 to 6500. But using a higher ISO can also mean more noise. The ISO determines the speed of the shot you can take: for moving objects you would have a higher ISO and still shots would have a much lower ISO.

More terms expained soon…

Yet another free graphic program

Ai Picture Explorer (AiPICX) is a graphics application that views, edits, enhances, manages and organizes photos — plays multimedia too. It empowers digital photo enthusiasts with advanced batch image processing and conversion capabilities. Included is a Batch UnZipper which extracts multiple ZIPs. Integrated batch rename, move and delete functions seamlessly integrate with its Slide Album to help collectors review organize and delete image collections. Content providers (and collectors) can create thumbnailed HTML catalogs for DVD/CD media or simply track contents of removable media with contact sheets or comments and 3D navigation buttons. Novices will appreciate our Web Pages for Dummies wizard.

What makes a good photo

A good photo is not about the equipment you have. There are many great shots taken on a Box Brownie. It is about composition, aesthetics, perception and the use of light.

There is now a fantastic site which talks about the basics of photography. It is called Photo Tips

Kodak has composed the tutorials. There are rules to photography from taking shots of babies to what you are going to sell on ebay to something you might one day publish. All the basics of good composition and lighting are on this site.

Having a good photo editor is also probably necessary these days. Now, Photoshop and Paint shop pro are the best, but they cost. I have a list of free graphic editors on oz web hub. But here are a couple of new ones, also free.

PhotoPad is one of them. It has an attractive interface and does what most people want when it comes to photo editing. It crops, straightens and corrects colour and removes red-eye.

Photoscape is another. It’s not as good looking as Photo Pad but it functions just like it. It does a few extra things too. There’s a back lighting effect and a ‘bloom’ feature making for glam portraits.

There is another application which does only one thing. ShiftN straightens converging verticals. There’s no preview in this app but if all you want to do is correct that photo you have of the Empire State building, then it’s for you.

Happy learning!

Police remove Bill Henson's nude photographs from gallery

The roslyn oxley9 gallery sent out a media release on the 23 May, 2008 saying the following:

Statement on behalf of Roslyn Oxley9 Gallery and Bill Henson

After much consideration we have decided to withdraw a number of works from the current Bill Henson exhibition that have attracted controversy. The current show, without the said works, will be re-opened for viewing in coming days.

Bill Henson is one of Australia’s leading contemporary artists and is internationally respected. His works are held in every leading art institution in Australia and are included in the collections of a number of the world’s most prestigious art museums. The Art Gallery of New South Wales and the National Gallery of Victoria have both recently held a retrospective of 30 years of the artist’s work.

Roslyn Oxley9 Gallery will remain closed while the current exhibition is re-hung.

Someone had complained to the police and the Vice Squad removed the photographs on the grounds that the photos were pornographic.

Since then, controversy has raged on TV, in newspapers and on radio in Australia.

I must stress here that I have not seen these photos before they were removed. I have only seen what Google, TV and newspapers have shown.

What are the photos? They are nude photos of 12 to 13 girls and boys. The photography is, in my opinion, very artistic. Shadows are used to show what the artist says he intends. To evoke the vulnerability and fragility of that stage of adolescence. Coming from the light to the dark or vice versa. The shadows also act to cover most of the sexual parts of the bodies, although not all. I don’t know if that was the photographer’s intention. Also, the pose often hides breasts and pubic areas with the use of limbs. Bill Henson has been showing such photos around the world and in Australia for many years. He says this stage of life fascinates him. He also takes many other photos of subjects not so controversial.

Recently, the Australian Government held a Twenty 20 summit including the experts in all fields of life’s endeavours. Many ideas were floated and presented. It was seen to be a success. But the Creative stream of the conference, headed by Cate Blanchette, released their statement saying that this was censorship of art.

Now, I don’t think it is censorship of art until the matter has been through the courts. If the works are said to be pornographic (which I don’t think) then the gallery and the artist has committed a crime and the works should not be shown. It has not been the Censorship Board which has made these decisions.

What bothers me most is that a girl or boy of that age is not in a psychological or emotional state to be able to give informed consent to being models for the photographer. Of course their parents gave consent. But is that right? I don’t think I would.

The photographer is now 52 and therefore in a position of power during photo shootings. I’m not at all suggesting that the young people were not safe in this environment. The photos portray the youths as almost asexual really. Now I don’t know what control the parents or youths have after giving consent to the photo shoot. Do they have control of the finished shot? Presumably this would have to be the photographer’s decision.

I know nudes of all ages have been portrayed in art. But in photos? And in these times of hypersensitivity to pedophiles and child sexual abuse and exploitation? Of course there are the really sexualized images of young girls in advertisements but these girls are clothed. I hate it, but I wouldn’t censor it.

I don’t think these Henson photos are sexualized. But it still disturbs me.

Well, the matter is in the hands of the police now, so I guess not much more can be said, except that Henson so far will not talk to police on his lawyer’s advice and he will not name the model or her parents and he will not say when the photos were taken.

But I’m interested in your view. I cannot show any images here. They are copyrighted. But you can do a google search for them. Many galleries do not allow viewing of larger images however.

As of June 6 2008, no charges are being brought. The Classification Board also classified the works as PG.

New free Adobe photo editing software

Photoshop Express is currently in beta form and is free. I hope it stays free because it looks excellent. I can’t access it at the moment because it is only for USA residents, but here is what it says it offers:

You can use tools to crop, straighten, fix white balance and exposure, highlight, alter shadow levels, red-eye removal and sharpening. Why would one need Photoshop or Photoshop Elements?

The retouch tool is a bit like the healing brush tool in Photoshop. You can even turn a photo into a sketch.

After editing, you can store your photos on Adobe’s servers. You get 2GB of space. You get a URL like this: http://……………………. .photoshop.com

Using Adjust Color for Skin Tone in Photoshop Elements

Using Adobe Photoshop Elements 6 again, here is how you can automatically adjust the skin tone of a person in a photo. This photo is of me taken with flash after a 40 degree day and after finally getting into the air conditioned Rod Laver Arena at the Australian Open tennis at a night session. Obviously I’m not looking my best.

Awful shot of me

By the way I have used the TNT screen capture to take that screen shot. I think it’s worth buying.

Anyway, my face is pale.

So I can go to Enhance> Adjust Color> Adjust Color for Skin Tone and click on the face.  You can do that automatically, or use the sliders to do it manually.

Jenny Campbell
You can now see the difference in skin tone. Hey I don’t think I’m a purist anymore about photos, but I’m sorry to have to inflict that awful photo as a demonstration on you.
