Contact forms on blogs or web sites

I noticed that my Contact plugin was looking a bit odd on the ‘new’ blog so I decided to look at the page source. I found some malicious code there!!!! Usually it is an iframe like this <iframe…..www.somethingnasty.com……..iframe>

So I deactivated that contact form plugin and got another one. That code went away. If you see it on a web page, delete from web page, but in this blog it wasn’t with the theme but with the wordpress upload. I found it too difficult to find the malicious code.

The latest contact forms with Catcha and so on seemed to require too much configuration for my liking, so I have one which wordpress recommends. Much better.

I finally managed to create navigation across the top of the page, so I’m now happy.

I am going to use a photo here to check out this feature.

O………I have found a bug in this theme. The title is picking up my first category name, rather than my extra tagline.

Just discovered Zemanta

Where have I been? Zemanta is wonderful. It can be downloaded as a Firefox add on. It can work on any blogging platform. It suggests photos (from Flickr) for your blog, tags and related articles from other blogs, including Amazon Books with your own referral ID on them. I love it. See the reblog sign down on the right. That’s what it does also. That’s how I discovered it. I reblogged someone else’s article.

Also it allows you to easily put your link on Facebook, Twitter and Mashable or almost anywhere you want.

And you can apply links to the content of your blog, which are mostly definitions from wikipedia or the URL addresses. You don’t need to code them. They just happen.

Below are some of the related articles.

Great blog with many blogging tools

weblog tools collection

What first strikes you about this blog is that it has many very nice templates for wordpress blogs.

It also has an extensive collection of resource links to useful blog enhancements such as widgets and plugins.

Piclens will now download videos to watch in full screen

PicLens firefox add on, which I have downloaded, instantly transforms my browser into a full-screen 3D experience for viewing images across the web. The new interactive “3D Wall” and built-in search function lets you effortlessly drag, click, zoom, and zip your way around a wall of pictures for an extraordinary viewing experience.

I also attempted to add the piclens plugin for wordpress but failed. I know why now. My host blocks external RSS sites unless I ask for the ones I want to be whitelisted.

Now Piclens will allow you to download videos and watch them on a full screen.

This video will explain it all a lot better than I can sum up.

Testing similar posts plugin

I have just added this plugin and find that so far no similar posts are found. Maybe it needs a new post.

Later

There is a lot of configuring to do with this plugin. First you need to go to settings and change settings in Similar posts as well as Similar posts feed. You also need to recreate your index by going to the plugin and seeing the link to this and then click on ‘recreate index’

Now it is working. Oh and you have to add some code to your index page.

Later

Wrong. It is only picking up the post that is written, not past posts. I’ll have to read more about this one. Or maybe it doesn’t picks up posts retrospectively even though I have installed a past post plugin.

Any ideas out there?

My plugins didn't work

For a long time I’ve been having trouble with some of my word press plugins. What they ended up having in common was that each of them like commentluv and entredroppers required my database to connect to an external RSS feed. So I worked with both the makers of these plugins and they checked them and they were set up correctly but we couldn’t work out why they were not working.

I took out a ticket with my host. Here’s the story I got:

We have a custom firewall and it will not allow access from external url’s. We need to add those urls in the firewall whitelist so that you can access them. Please note that most of the common urls are already included in the whitelist and I have reconfigured this now. Could you please check again and let us know the external urls that are needed to whitelist, if the issue still persists so that we can add that to the file.

So I contacted each of the plugin makers again and they gave me the URLs I needed and my host placed them on the firewall whitelist and they work.
Hooray! It wasn’t me afterall.

Testing flickr plugin

I can get the plugin to work for the posts which contain photos, but it takes an age to load if it ever does. I didn’t wait to find out. So I deleted that and relied on the widget alone. No luck there either.

I think the problem is that my server is not using PHP 5+ to support my blog. I have also emailed PicLens.

If you too cannot add this to your blog, what you can do is download the piclens Firefox add-on. Then on other sites you can click on any image where an arrow appears and that will open up your browser so you can see the slideshow of any one else’s pictures.

Piclens plugin for word press

The PicLens Plugin for WordPress makes it easy for you to provide your readers with an immersive slideshow experience. Visitors simply click a “start slideshow” link to activate PicLens Lite, a slick filmstrip-style presentation console. From there, they can play or pause your slideshow, or better yet dive into a full-screen mode. Optionally, you can also enable our sidebar widget to display a mini slideshow of images from throughout your blog.

I am about to download it myself. My next post should contain some photo slideshows.

Really useful plugins for word press

I’ve just plugged in a similar post plugin which I got from this page

The whole site is very useful for word press information. I don’t know about you but I find the forum on word press slow to find an answer.

Compatible plugins and themes for word press

Once word press 2.5 comes out and we all upgrade, there will be a lag between the compatible plugins and themes. WordPress.org does have a list of those compatible with each version of word press. I have just had to upload my commentluv plugin again as the old one wasn’t working. This plugin allows the commenter’s last post to appear with his/her last feed item.
