Using Adjust Color for Skin Tone in Photoshop Elements

Using Adobe Photoshop Elements 6 again, here is how you can automatically adjust the skin tone of a person in a photo. This photo is of me taken with flash after a 40 degree day and after finally getting into the air conditioned Rod Laver Arena at the Australian Open tennis at a night session. Obviously I’m not looking my best.

Awful shot of me

By the way I have used the TNT screen capture to take that screen shot. I think it’s worth buying.

Anyway, my face is pale.

So I can go to Enhance> Adjust Color> Adjust Color for Skin Tone and click on the face.  You can do that automatically, or use the sliders to do it manually.

You can now see the difference in skin tone. Hey I don’t think I’m a purist anymore about photos, but I’m sorry to have to inflict that awful photo as a demonstration on you.

Screen capture utility

I downloaded a 30 day trial of the TNT screen capture utility. It is great! Much better than anything else out there for free.

Here’s what it can do

· Capture anything and everything
· Editing tools and graphical object
· XP screenshots with rounded corners
· Smooth resizing – no jaggy edges
· Capture mouse pointer with shadow
· Drop shadows, transparency and more
· Screenshots with irregular shapes
· Just click for default Windows colors
· Thumbnail function
· E-mail your screenshots
· Simple and intuitive user interface

So useful for tutorials!

Using the Magic Extractor

If you only want to edit photos, Adobe Photoshop Elements 6 is probably your best bet. It is much cheaper than Photoshop and has almost as many features, if not a few more to do with photos, albums, printing, collages etc.

I bought a magazine the other day called ” Photoshop Elements Essentials” and it had a 30 day trial of Photoshop Elements 6. Included were a number of tutorials which you may also be able to get at Lynda.com

I just checked this and you cannot access the free tutorials. But you can get them from Learning Photoshop Elements.

Today, I tried the Extractor tool. I’d been trying this on Photoshop without much luck.

Choose a photo which would look even better if only one feature was highlighted onto a white background instead of the background you currently have, like sport shot.

Sam practising

This is a shot from an Australian Open Tennis championship which I took.

Now to extract just an image of Sam,

1. Select Image> Magic Extractor
2. It took a while to do this and I didn’t get a perfect result, but you use the Foreground Brush to select Sam and the Background Brush to select the background. Cover as much of both areas as you can. Then go to Preview. Photoshop Elements will extract the image for you.
3. If you are not happy with the results you can use the Point Eraser Tool.

Using Curves to make photos brighter or darker

You can use many graphic programs to alter the brightness or darkness of a photo, but usually only using an auto feature. You can get some quite interesting effects if you use Curves in Photo shop. Once again, I’m using Photo shop 7.

Too dark
That’s too dark a picture, so:
1. Go to Layer>New adjustment layer>Curves
2. Click group with previous layer
3. Move the curve in the box around until you get the brightness or darkness the way you want it.
4. OK and Save

Piclens will now download videos to watch in full screen

PicLens firefox add on, which I have downloaded, instantly transforms my browser into a full-screen 3D experience for viewing images across the web. The new interactive “3D Wall” and built-in search function lets you effortlessly drag, click, zoom, and zip your way around a wall of pictures for an extraordinary viewing experience.

I also attempted to add the piclens plugin for wordpress but failed. I know why now. My host blocks external RSS sites unless I ask for the ones I want to be whitelisted.

Now Piclens will allow you to download videos and watch them on a full screen.

This video will explain it all a lot better than I can sum up.

The problem with digital cameras

When I first got my digital camera, after having used an SLR for years, I couldn’t work out why people were holding theirs way out in front of them. I soon worked it out.
The LCD lens on a digital camera is pretty useless on a bright day. All you can see is black and you take photos blind.
My camera does have a viewfinder but it isn’t any use when I’m taking a zoomed image. What I see is not what I get.

There are cameras you can get which overcome the problem. The Sony W and the Canon G9 are just two of them. They have viewfinders which act like the ones on SLRs.

Or you can buy a Delkin Pop-up Shade which sticks to the back of the camera, protecting the LCD and which folds out to shade the screen.

Graphic headings for blogs or web sites

The header you see above is my own photo, taken when I was in NY at the Guggenheim Museum. I cropped the photo so that only a section of it appears here.

Now you too can customize your blog with your own header at least.  For word press, I copied the graphic which was there and in a graphic editor I worked out its size.

I then cropped my own image to the exact same size.

Then you simply upload via FTP to header.jpg or gif. In my case I substituted 4 headings with the same graphic, but you can override that later with other graphics you like.

By the way, I’m happy for anyone to copy my header and if you want me to make another type from more of my photos, just contact me with the dimensions you need.

A couple of web design tips

You can use an image to create a vertical or horizontal line in a web page. Create a 2 pixel by 2 pixel image in the color of your choice. This single image can be used to create a vertical or horizontal line on your web page simply by changing the height and width attributes.
——————————-
You can pre format your text without using any additional html elements simply by using the <.pre> tag. Type your text or code within your html, just as you’d like it to appear, and enclose it with the <.pre> and <./pre> tags. It will display your text exactly as you typed it.
Delete the .s from the pre tags. I can’t post with the code intact otherwise

Using Paint to make a photo collage

Microsoft Paint
Image via Wikipedia

You’ll need to resize your photos to the final image size you want in a free program like Irfanview. Paint can’t do this.

One of the best ways to collect photos and to send them is the photo collage. Most people’s minds veer off the idea of making a photo collage. It seems too hard to contemplate. But it’s not hard. It’s fun!

There are tons of software programs, some free, available for download on the net that can help you create a photo collage that works. But in actuality, a little work with your friendly Paint program, usually installed on your hard drive, is all you need. It’s not as easy to control the final image size, but putting together a collage in Paint is easy.

Open a new Paint file, click the bottom right-hand corner dot and drag down and to the right to make the page the size you want. You can repeat this process to make it bigger and bigger. If you want a background that’s a different colour from the automatic white one, choose the colour you want from the colour toolbar, click the paint bucket icon, then click inside the page. This colour can be changed later using the same process.

Get all the photos you want together in a single folder, using thumbnails to view them at a glance. Right-click on the first photo and choose “Open with Paint.” From “Edit,” choose “Select All,” then “Copy.” Go back to your original collage page and choose “Paste” from “Edit.” Your photo will appear on the page and you can drag it to where you’d like it.

Continue the process with the other photos until you’ve finished your collage. By working with your picture programs, you’ll quickly become adept at your new hobby.

There is a new free way to create a collage video now. Try Animoto
