Upload photos to a professional site
I have written before about how to back up and store your photos online and about how to make a buck or two at the stock photo sites, but this new Sydney based site established recently by Andrew Coppin looks extremely interesting.
It is called Ph.Art and is intended for the better photographers to display and perhaps sell their photos, but you can store a few megabytes worth of personal photos as well.
It offers the ability to upload your own gallery, browse and buy photos, exhibit and sell photos, share and rate photos and enter competitions.
You can also join an online digital photography course to complete at your own leisure (it costs), access tutorials and tips and tricks, join the forum and read the blog. You can even submit videos.
More digital camera terms
My camera, being a compact point and shoot one, does not produce RAW images, but jpegs. RAW imaging is better. RAW images are recorded unprocessed and uncompressed from the sensor onto a memory card. You then use special software to process it further.
The new DSLR cameras have focal lengths like the old film cameras. A 50mm lens on a DSLR camera has the same angle view as a 75mm lens on a film camera. With the compact digital cameras, sensors come in different sizes. One camera with a focal length of 6.2 mm is equal to 35mm lens on a film camera, while another might be 7.6mm equalling 35mm.
In digital cameras the white balance setting is usually set to auto, but there are possible settings: “auto”, “shade” “tungsten, and “fluorescent”. With film cameras, I remember lessons where we had to learn about getting a proper black and white photo by setting the aperture against a grey background.

How to make money with digital photography
I have been a photographer for many years and have done courses and developed my own photos. Now though, I only use a digital camera a Canon Power Shot S30 in fact. I bought a digital camera very early on and paid a fortune at the time. Since then, digital cameras have come down in price and my 3.2 mega pixel capacity is not as I’d like it. Nevertheless, I can still take quite large photos of excellent quality with the camera set on ‘large’ resolution. You can get 10 pixel cameras now for quite small prices.
Now, to get your photos ready for stock photo sites, for which you will get some money if your photo is bought, you will really need Photo Shop. I know it is expensive but it is the best. It has every feature you would want for web design, brochures, leaflets and any thing else that these stock photo sites like. You can look at my free editor page but none of them do the job that Photo Shop does and if you are serious about photography you need it.
There are heaps of Photo Shop tutorials free on the Internet, but to have them all together and to be able to look up an index, a book still serves the best function. PhotoShop for Windows & Macintosh is one of them.

You can use these stock photos at Cafe Press. Make a calendar, or any product and sell it. Or use them for brochures, book covers, web page backgrounds.
