What social networking sites will survive the financial crisis?

I haven’t done a real study of this, but I watch as some networking sites in my demographic become more and more popular and others decline.

Firstly, there are those people who have jobs and are not that interested in making money from the internet. More and more of them appear to be joining Facebook. My age group isn’t going for Myspace. My friends are using it for advertising social events and it seems to work quite well. Then again there are still those real life friends of mine who would never join Facebook because they don’t want their information anywhere on the net. A natural fear, but one which doesn’t have to be frightening if one is very clear about what one writes down and shares in terms of their lives.

These sort of people would probably use Skype as well. Skype has improved a lot with video and webcams so that you can see your companion. Skype too is used by people who do actually find people in the world who they would like to become more familiar with in real life. There are at least two people I know who have created romances using this form of communication.

Blogging is really for those who hope to make money from the internet. Well, I don’t know about you, but my Google cheques are really drying up and I’ve heard the same is so for other bloggers and web site owners.

Twitter is really taking off and there are so many applications for Twitter. It combines well with Facebook.

There’s been at least one traffic generator I know of which has closed down – BlogRush. So there must be more.

Here’s a list of social networking sites from wikipedia

Do contribute with your thoughts about who will survive and who won’t and what is happening out there right now.

Twitter apps

I was going to write a list of all the twitter related applications, but it has already been done.

This site is most comprehensive and covers all platforms.

My twitter

My partner threw out all my papers to do with research for my blog.

Decided to advertise my twitter as it appears so popular.

follow me on Twitter

Twitter: you can be banned

An acquaintance of mine signed in (or attempted) to his Twitter account, only to find out it didn’t exist anymore. When he wrote to Twitter regarding this, their reply from support noted several reasons this could happen:
1. you’ve followed a large number of people in a short amount of time
2. there is a small number of followers compared to number of people you’re following
3. the updates consist mainly of links and not personal updates
4. a large number of users blocking the profile and writing in with spam complaints

Now, I don’t know the details, so I don’t know why this particular case happened, but it seems the first three could apply to over half of the people I follow.

What do you do when you first join Twitter? You add all your friends then go around following people that look interesting or fun. So most of us are guilty of #1 already in our first days of being a Twitter user.

Again with #2, if you are new or not particularly well known, for quite a while the people you follow is going to be a far higher number than those that follow you.

I can fully understand the #3 and #4. Most people want to see human conversation at least a good percentage of the time rather than 100% spam or links, but they do not seem to be clamping down on the links so much.

For me #4 must be the overriding factor. If you do all the above but get zero complaints, I suggest you should be fine. After all, if you don’t like someone, stop following them, right?

It seems that the safest way to make sure no ‘red flags’ are raised is to grow your Twitter account organically and make sure you mix chatty updates in with your links.

You don’t want to put lots of effort into your Twitter account only to find it doesn’t work any more!

Skype or Twitter or 3G mobile phones:CDMA mobile network ended in Australia

Tonight at 12 midnight the CDMA mobile network in Australia was turned off and the 3G network for mobiles (or cell phones) is now the only one available. I was listening to all the complaints on late night radio. Old CDMA networked phones in rural areas were working and now the 3G doesn’t. Some rang into the program using Skype because their mobiles were not working. There is going to be a real hullabaloo over this tomorrow.

telecommunications

Our new computer came with a skype headset, so I decided to get it going. I know one person who uses Skype but I didn’t call, as it was too late but the test was nice a clear. There’s chat there and there are pitfalls. Within 5 minutes I was being hit on by a Dutch man who was 38 and you know how old I am. He wanted a picture. No way. On the public phone bit I heard all sorts or weird phone calls. And to ring a land line or mobile you must buy credit. Cheaper than using a mobile or land line, I hear.

I’ve just added Twitter to my blog. It seems all the rage. But with Twitter people seem to write the most mundane things about ‘what they are up to’, including some fairly lewd activities.

So for Australians at the moment what is the solution for their telecommunications. I can use a 3G mobile, twitter, Facebook chat, gmail chat, landline and now Skype. But I live in a major capital city. It’s the remote and rural areas which are having problems. If I were stuck at my computer a lot, which I am a fair bit, then I think Skype would be best. But everyone must have Skype for it to be free. My friends don’t seem to have it yet. But it would bring down the phone bills if I got some credit for it to ring various businesses or radio stations, because I often use my mobile to ring such places as I need to be looking at my computer for details pertinent to my call.

I hope more people will get on to Skype soon so we can pay nothing for our phone calls then.

Social networking sites to which you should belong

I’m a member of about 11 social networking sites, most of which work in the same way. They also help you get more traffic to your web site or blog if you are a member of them. You might meet some people too.

I’m going to send you to my profile of each of the sites. From there you will be able to jin up as well as see what I’ve done with them. Unabashed self-promotion. What else?

Bloglines is important because you can read other blogs there and put a widget on your blog. Make comments on blogs you read.

Twitter is a simple application mainly for phone contact.

Facebook is a bit different in that you can use many applications there to build up a detailed view of what you have been up to! I’m a bit sick of Facebook and don’t want any more apps!

Flickr is mainly for photos

Squidoo is a place where you can create a web site.

A swicki is a site where you can create as many lens as you like and place the tags on your web site. These lens are on any issue. You can then tag you own web site so it is the first one that the searcher will find for that topic. I get a lot of traffic from these.

Linkedin is more for the professional trying to find old professional colleagues.

Stumbleupon is where you submit sites or blog posts you like so that it is user moderated rather than spidered by a bot. I think we should all use this one a lot more unselfishly unless we want to rely on Google and Yahoo. You should not stumble your own posts

Now ning is my new baby. Here you can add many things: a blog, photos, videos. You can create a group and join groups.

Everyone knows MySpace, but I haven’t bothered developing that one.

Digg is where people submit newsy type stories and like Stumbleupon you should not Digg yourself. I find non-USA sites very difficult to find here. The Australian market is so small that our cyclones are not of interest to the rest of the world.

I haven’t joined the next 2

Workbench is more for the business person.

Mixx is one I don’t know much about. I find I get social networking burn out pretty quickly.

If you join all these and work at them, you should get more traffic to your blog and/or web site. Join me there!

Here’s an interesting site if you want to make widgets for your web page or desktop.

You can also use the widgets that are there. There is a URL to each one and the embed instructions as well.

There’s a forum on this site as well.

Here’s another site which just offers you gadgets to add to your site.
