Word Press installation – God I'm an idiot!

I have spent hours and hours trying to install a new word press blog. I think I made this mistake the first time around and got my host to install it for me. I uploaded and deleted, uploaded and deleted, using massive amounts of broadband.

What was I going wrong? In the readme.html file I was clicking on the install link from my own computer!

It finally dawned on me………..after more coffee and cigarettes, that I should probably install from my server, so I added the readme.html to my url and clicked from there. Bingo!

I don’t know how anyone else realises this. Matt isn’t very clear here. But you all must realise it. It’s like something gets into your head and it won’t leave.

Anyway, the new blog is about social justice

Great blog with many blogging tools

weblog tools collection

What first strikes you about this blog is that it has many very nice templates for wordpress blogs.

It also has an extensive collection of resource links to useful blog enhancements such as widgets and plugins.

Word press themes lag behind word press upgrades

I’ve just upgraded my wordpress to 2.5.1 as advised. Luckily the theme I have at the moment is working.

But I’m still waiting for some of the themes I like to become compatible with 2.5.

Although, this upgrade is meant to be a security fix, I can’t see much that’s different from 2.5 just yet.

My plugins didn't work

For a long time I’ve been having trouble with some of my word press plugins. What they ended up having in common was that each of them like commentluv and entredroppers required my database to connect to an external RSS feed. So I worked with both the makers of these plugins and they checked them and they were set up correctly but we couldn’t work out why they were not working.

I took out a ticket with my host. Here’s the story I got:

We have a custom firewall and it will not allow access from external url’s. We need to add those urls in the firewall whitelist so that you can access them. Please note that most of the common urls are already included in the whitelist and I have reconfigured this now. Could you please check again and let us know the external urls that are needed to whitelist, if the issue still persists so that we can add that to the file.

So I contacted each of the plugin makers again and they gave me the URLs I needed and my host placed them on the firewall whitelist and they work.
Hooray! It wasn’t me afterall.

WordPress Theme Generator

I don’t know about you but I wouldn’t have a hope of making my own word press theme. There are so many free ones out there too. However, I just found this generator and if you can make a theme, your name and designs will become known in the word press world. That’s worth a fair bit of traffic
This online generator creates your own custom unique WordPress Theme. Without any need for HTML, JS, PHP, or CSS knowledge.

Change the colors, settings, layout, preview live, click “save” and download your unique WordPress theme zip-file. Extract, upload, set, and you are done! If you have any questions or need additions visit the forum.

Piclens plugin for word press

The PicLens Plugin for WordPress makes it easy for you to provide your readers with an immersive slideshow experience. Visitors simply click a “start slideshow” link to activate PicLens Lite, a slick filmstrip-style presentation console. From there, they can play or pause your slideshow, or better yet dive into a full-screen mode. Optionally, you can also enable our sidebar widget to display a mini slideshow of images from throughout your blog.

I am about to download it myself. My next post should contain some photo slideshows.

Really useful plugins for word press

I’ve just plugged in a similar post plugin which I got from this page

The whole site is very useful for word press information. I don’t know about you but I find the forum on word press slow to find an answer.

So testing ‘similar posts’ plugin

Compatible plugins and themes for word press

Once word press 2.5 comes out and we all upgrade, there will be a lag between the compatible plugins and themes. WordPress.org does have a list of those compatible with each version of word press. I have just had to upload my commentluv plugin again as the old one wasn’t working. This plugin allows the commenter’s last post to appear with his/her last feed item.

Customising your word press blog

This is my own video. Before embedding any You tube video, make sure you go to Users>Profile>unclick Visual editor.

You can now see You tube videos in a larger format

Graphic headings for blogs or web sites

The header you see above is my own photo, taken when I was in NY at the Guggenheim Museum. I cropped the photo so that only a section of it appears here.

Now you too can customize your blog with your own header at least.  For word press, I copied the graphic which was there and in a graphic editor I worked out its size.

I then cropped my own image to the exact same size.

Then you simply upload via FTP to header.jpg or gif. In my case I substituted 4 headings with the same graphic, but you can override that later with other graphics you like.

By the way, I’m happy for anyone to copy my header and if you want me to make another type from more of my photos, just contact me with the dimensions you need.
