How to use FTP

I am using FTP LE as an example, but I use Ace FTP 3 myself.

I have put crosses on my information. Now what does it all mean?

This is the first window you will see when you click on your FTP LE icon

Profile name = a name which reminds you of the site you are uploading (any name)

Host Name /Address = your IP number which your host will provide

Host Type = leave this at Automatic

User ID = your host will provide you with this

Password = your host will provide you with this.

Click okay to connect.

I've made this image smaller, but what you see on the left is information on your local computer.

What you see on the right is information on your host's server. You need to click on the arrow top left and then the ChDir button to find where your site information on your hard drive is. It is best to have all your web page files in a folder called 'yourdomainname' or something on your C drive.

On the right is everything you have uploaded onto your host and the words public_html or just a / should appear on that box top right. You can click on that arrow to see what other places to upload files to. (cgi-bin) will be one of them and they are for CGI scripts and some other files.

Now all you do to upload your files is to click on your file that you want to upload on the left and then either click on the right tending arrow or double click on the file you want to upload or just drag the file over to the right side. To download you do the reverse.

You may also want to create directories on the server side. To do this find where it tells you to create a new directory and do so. I use 'images' as a subdirectory.
