How to build a web site?

So you want a web site or a blog but you don't know where to begin

You will need a few pieces of software for designing and publishing a web site

You will need a web authoring program

I use Macromedia Dreamweaver because I am a visual learner. I like to see how the page will look as I go. It is a WYSIWYG program which means What You See Is What You Get. It also does some very marvelous things.

There is a new open source (free) program like Dreamweaver now and it is called NVU It is very like Dreamweaver and is for all platforms and all computers.

You'll need to know about CSS

For css you'll need some other software. I use a lite version of Top Style. Or you can use a css generator

You'll need an FTP program unless you are using the online content management systems or a blog.

You need software to get your files onto your host's server.

AceFTP 3 Pro is a powerful and secure file transfer solution, designed for novices and experts alike. I love this one. There is a trial version there too. Learn how to use FTP

You will need some graphic programs

Graphic editors

Adobe Photoshop is the best however. It does everything so much more professionally. As a cheaper option you might likeDesign software by Xara

You might like to learn by using templates

This template is designed by Andreas. You can click his link or the link in the footer. That's one problem with using a template. You must leave the author's name intact.

You just want someone else to design your site?

Quicksites is your answer or contact me. I also recommend my web design colleague at Smooth stuff Susanna deals mainly in Content management systems, mostly word press.

You might want a blog instead

blogger.com and WordPress.org are free.

For a blog which is an extension of a web site, like mine

Your server (host) must support at least PHP 4 and MySQL

If you need hosting, I cannot recommend my own host enough. It is called Host Nexus and every time I've had a problem with my hosting, I take out a ticket and I get support almost instantly. There is also a forum for support and an easy to use Control panel.
