Making transparent gifs

Here we mean both how to make a gif transparent and how to make a transparent gif.

Make a gif transparent in PSP

Only gifs can be made transparent.

Save an image as a gif and close the image.

Re-open it and use the dropper tool to right click on the color in the background that is there now.

Select Colors > Set Color Transparency.

In the box Check Standard/web safe and then OK In the box called Set Pallette transparency check Set the transparency value to the current background color. Click OK. Save image to a new one.

Now how to make a transparent gif

Open PSP and make a new image about 8 by 8 pixels, ensuring that your background is transparent. We use these to separate pictures and text. Save as a gif.

Now when you use it on your web site you can make it as wide and long as you wish.

Making a transparent gif is fairly easy in Photoshop also.
